The developmental paradox of false belief understanding: a dual- system approach

چکیده

In our article we explore the developmental paradox of false belief understanding. This paradox follows from the claim that young infants already have an ‘implicit’ notion of false belief, despite the fact that they consistently fail tests assessing ‘explicit’ forms of false belief understanding. First, we argue that recent dual-system proposals to solve this paradox are unsatisfactory because they either lack the conceptual resources to deal with the differences between implicit and explicit false belief understanding, or ignore questions about system interaction. Second, we discuss a number of problems dual-system approaches have to address in order to account for the development of false belief understanding, and propose a model that combines a layered model of perspective taking with an inhibition-selectionrepresentation mechanism operating on different levels.

The developmental paradox of false belief understanding: a dual-system solution

We explore the developmental paradox of false belief understanding. This paradox follows from the claim that young infants already have an understanding of false belief, despite the fact that they consistently fail the elicited-response false belief task. First, we argue that recent proposals to solve this paradox are unsatisfactory because they (i) try to give a full explanation of false belie...

Procedural Metacognition and False Belief Understanding in 3- to 5-Year-Old Children

Some studies, so far limited in number, suggest the existence of procedural metacognition in young children, that is, the practical capacity to monitor and control one's own cognitive activity in a given task. The link between procedural metacognition and false belief understanding is currently under theoretical discussion. If data with primates seem to indicate that procedural metacognition an...

False-belief understanding in 2.5-year-olds: evidence from two novel verbal spontaneous-response tasks.

Recent research indicates that toddlers and infants succeed at various non-verbal spontaneous-response false-belief tasks; here we asked whether toddlers would also succeed at verbal spontaneous-response false-belief tasks that imposed significant linguistic demands. We tested 2.5-year-olds using two novel tasks: a preferential-looking task in which children listened to a false-belief story whi...

The influence of language and socioeconomic status on children's understanding of false belief.

Study 1 investigated whether differences in the lexical explicitness with which languages express false belief influence children's performance on standard false belief tasks. Preschoolers speaking languages with explicit terms (Turkish and Puerto Rican Spanish) were compared with preschoolers speaking languages without explicit terms (Brazilian Portuguese and English) on questions assessing fa...
